HBO is developing a TV show based on James McTeigue’s anarchistic cult classic, V For Vendetta. More on the project below.
If anything, V For Vendetta has only grown in relevance since the original comic book’s 1980s run. Director James McTeigue brought Alan Moore, David Lloyd and Tony Weare’s graphic novels to the big screen in 2005, and it’s still a yearly watch for many, especially on Guy Fawkes Night.
Variety now reports that HBO is currently working on a TV show based on the graphic novel. Pete Jackson, who wrote 2022’s Somewhere Boy and the upcoming The Death Of Bunny Munro, has been hired to write the series with DC Studios’ James Gunn and Peter Safran producing.
The storyline follows V, an anarchist wearing a Guy Fawkes mask, who begins an outlandish revolution against the far-right, fascist state that the UK has become.
The film adaptation starred Hugo Weaving as the faceless V and Natalie Portman as Evey, a young girl who becomes his ally after V rescues her from assault.

Warner Bros and DC Studios are currently putting a lot of effort – not to mention money – into turning some of DC’s most beloved comic books into TV shows instead of films. Last year’s The Penguin was a major success critically, audiences seemed to love it and it deservedly picked up a decent amount of awards. We’ve also just seen Peacemaker finish up its excellent second season and we’ve got Lanterns to look forward to in 2026.
We’d imagine 2019’s Watchmen is something the current studio heads are looking to emulate. Politics have always been a part of comic books, but Watchmen was one of the first comic book TV shows that included such themes so prominently and boldly.
There’s not a whole lot of information on the V For Vendetta series yet. It’s only in early stages of development at the moment, it seems, and it’s unclear when production will begin. We’ll bring you more news on V For Vendetta as we hear it, though.
