Kevin Costner pops up a fair amount in the trailer for Yellowstone season 5 part 2. He just won’t be in the show itself.
Much of the story of Yellowstone over the last 18 months has concerned what’s not happening on screen as much as what’s on it. After the show screened the first half of season five, coming to an end in January 2023, there’s been a lot of waiting. Waiting for it to come back, and waiting to see if Kevin Costner would reprise the lead role of John Dutton.
Well, the show’s back from 10th November 2024, and as you probably know, it’s going to be Kevin Costner-less. Costner is pursuing his Horizon series of movies, amongst other projects, and for whatever reason, Yellowstone schedules didn’t line up.
Paramount thus has faced an interesting challenge here as to how to sell the programme now that its lead actor has gone. The answer? Put Kevin Costner in the trailer for it anyway. It reminds me a bit of watching The Bourne Legacy, the first and only movie without Matt Damon. Where, for the first half hour, they kept showing us pictures of Matt Damon anyway.
The promo for Yellowstone season 5 part 2 has been released, and sets up what looks like a big, impending battle, as you’d probably expect if you’ve been following the programme. It’s still a little up in the air if season 5 will actually mark the end of the main Yellowstone show, with rumours swirling about cast being asked about a season 6. In truth though for Paramount, it might just be a bit of a relief to finally get these episodes out into the world.
Here’s the official trailer…
And the brief, to the point synopsis reads as follows…
