Poor Things director Yorgos Lanthimos’ next film, Bugonia, will premiere in November 2025, and will star Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons.

Greek auteur Yorgos Lanthimos is following up the acclaimed Poor Things with an anthology film, Kinds Of Kindness this month. But before the latter film’s even been released, the date for his next film has been announced: Focus Features has said that Bugonia, starring Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons, will premiere in US cinemas on the 7th November 2025.

A film Lanthimos has had in the works for a while, Bugonia is a remake of the 2003 South Korean sci-fi comedy, Save The Green Planet!. The original, a hit in its home country, was about a deranged man who, convinced of an imminent alien invasion, kidnaps an executive in the mistaken belief that he’s one of the invaders.

Off-beat, violent and blackly funny – writer-director Jang Joon-hwan was inspired by Misery when he came up with the concept – it’s sounds like ideal Lanthimos fodder. Universal Pictures also appears to be confident about its commercial appeal; The Hollywood Reporter has the news that the studio will be giving Bugonia a wide international release in US cinemas.

Kinds Of Kindness, a trio of stories in which Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons and a host of other actors all play different characters, is out in UK cinemas on the 28th June. It’s the latest film from a singular director whose stature has steadily grown over the past decade.

His English-language films The Lobster (2015) and The Killing Of A Sacred Deer (2017) brought his uncompromising, deadpan style to a wider audience, while the more accessible period comedy The Favourite was both a critical success (it was nominated for nine Oscars, among other gongs) and was a hit with audiences.

Poor Things, a surrealist sex comedy riff on Frankenstein, and adapted from the book by Alasdair Gray, was similarly well-received, 11 Oscar nominations – including a Best Actress win for Emma Stone. Little wonder she’s become a regular part of Lanthimos’ repertory since, with major roles in Kinds Of Kindness and Bugonia.

When we get a UK release date for Bugonia, we’ll let you know.
