It’s almost the season of yule, which means we’re getting close to this year’s Doctor Who Christmas Special. Here’s a trailer to remind us:

A festive season of pies, turkey and indigestion is almost here, and with it comes a Doctor Who Christmas Special. Called Joy To The World, the yuletide episode will again star the latest incarnation of The Doctor, played by Ncuti Gatwa, who’ll be joined by a constellation of guest stars including Joel Fry, Jonathan Aris and Steph de Whalley.

As always, there’ll be lots of time-hopping, fast-talking hijinx, this time involving a mysterious London hotel. As we learned in May, a chap named Steven Moffat’s behind the script. You may have heard of him.

If you want a bit more plot detail, here’s a synopsis:

Nicola Coughlan (Bridgerton, Derry Girls) [co-stars] as Joy, who checks into a London hotel in 2024 only to discover that her quiet stay is anything but ordinary. When Joy opens a secret doorway to the Time Hotel, she discovers danger, dinosaurs, and the Doctor. But a deadly plan is unfolding across the Earth, just in time for Christmas.

What is going on in Joy’s hotel room? An old enemy of the Doctor’s is lurking in the wings and all of human history hangs in the balance. Can the Doctor save Christmas, everywhere, all at once?

Dinosaurs? At this time of year? Localised in this hotel? Yes, we’re tremendously intrigued.

The Doctor Who Christmas Special will air on BBC One at 5:10pm on, logically enough, Christmas Day (that’s the 25th December, date fans) and will stream simultaneously on iPlayer. Hurrah!
