Top Gun Maverick director Joseph Kosinski is moving from F1 to Miami Vice, as he signs up for the new movie.
If Tom Cruise really did “save Hollywood’s ass” – as Steven Spielberg is reputed to have told Tom Cruise in the wake of Top Gun: Maverick's incredible success in 2022 – then the film’s director Joseph Kosinski must also share in some of the acclaim for keeping the lights on.
The town has certainly been quick to reward Kosinski, too. Lots of studios have been keen to partner with the filmmaker on the two projects that he’s announced thus far: a Formula 1 racing movie coming this summer starring Brad Pitt (called F1) and an untitled UFO movie that will follow next.
Kosinski ultimately chose to partner with Apple on both movies, but a report from Daniel Richtman (via Dark Horizons) claims that he has set up a project at Universal: a remake of Miami Vice.
Originally, Miami Vice was a 1980s TV crime drama produced by Michael Mann. It made a household name out of Don Johnson and made designer stubble and rolled up jacket sleeves a fashion essential. Also, along with the Sega arcade game OutRun (which is reportedly getting the film treatment courtesy of Michael Bay and Sydney Sweeney, no less!), it made the Ferrari Testarossa one of the most desirable car in the world. The show also became must-watch TV due to its ground-breaking style.

Michael Mann eventually remade the show into a feature film starring Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx in 2006. While the film wasn’t a huge commercial success, it’s an interesting one: tonally different to the series and has garnered a loyal following over the past couple of decades.
Now Kosinski is reportedly looking to direct another remake of Miami Vice, and all we’ve really been told at this point is that Nightcrawler and Kong: Skull Island screenwriter Dan Gilroy is behind the script. Nightcrawler remains a hugely underrated film and we’re curious to see what angle Gilroy and Kosinski are taking with the material here. Still, given that the F1 director has two more films to shepherd through to release before Miami Vice, it might be some time before we find out more. When we do hear any further information however, we’ll let you know.
