Ben Wheatley’s new film BULK will premiere at the Edinburgh International Film Festival. More on the secret project below.

This year’s Edinburgh Film Festival will take place in August and programme info is starting to trickle in.

The festival includes a Midnight Madness strand which tends to focus on horror, thriller and sci-fi movies and their opening night film is, excitingly, Ben Wheatley’s new film, BULK. It’s especially exciting because no one knew he was making it.

BULK was filmed in secret and is described as “return to the thrillingly free-spirited filmmaker’s homegrown, kaleidoscopic works like In The Earth and A Field In England,” according to Deadline.

There’s no info on what the film is about or who stars in it, but that only adds to the intrigue. The Festival’s director Paul Ridd described Wheatley’s latest as “truly unique film that took our breath away then fried our brains.”

Wheatley remains one of the most intriguing British genre directors currently working. His last feature film In The Earth dug into our lingering fears of the pandemic with chilling accuracy, but after that, the director put all of his focus on Generation Z, his Channel 4 TV series which aired earlier this year.

BULK follows films such as Alien: Romulus and The Substance in the Midnight Madness strand, which aims to highlight new genre cinema. There’s no word on whether BULK is heading into cinemas any time soon after its world premiere at EIFF, but hopefully news about that won’t be too far behind.

“I’m very excited and proud to be premiering BULK at Edinburgh International Film Festival’s Midnight Madness,” Wheatley said. “This is a midnight film through and through. Car chases, gun fights, sci-fi, and romance. Thanks to Edinburgh for having us. It’s going to be a wild night.”

Car chases, gun fights, sci-fi and romance? Say no more, we’ll be checking this one out.
