It sounds as if Tom Cruise wants to play Cole Trickle again, as he namechecks a possible Days Of Thunder 2. More on the story here.

Tom Cruise is enjoying his victory lap for the Mission: Impossible saga, as his press tour for the incoming Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning takes him around the world. Given that the last few years have seen him primarily making two Mission: Impossible films and one Top Gun movie, it’s allowed time for a slate of projects to build up. He’s shot a film with Alejandro Iñárritu already, and is now mulling what his next blockbuster choice will be.

Talking to Today in Australia, he confirmed that he and writer/director Christopher McQuarrie are juggling a bunch of ideas. Also, understandably, he’s talking up a potential third Top Gun movie, which given the raging success of Top Gun: Maverick  in 2022 seems almost a given.

However, the one that he’s thrown into the mix is a follow-up to 1990’s Days Of Thunder. This first surfaced last year, and apparently, is still on the Tom Cruise slate.

Billed at the time as a reunion of the Top Gun team – Cruise as the star, Tony Scott as the director, Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer producing – Days Of Thunder is not prime Tom Cruise. Successful, but underperforming at the box office, it’s a film whose behind the scenes stories of excess proved far more interesting than the tale told on film. Granted, Tom Cruise wanting to make another film in a fast car is entirely plausible. But still: who’s out there hankering for and asking about Days Of Thunder 2?

“It took me 35 years to figure out Top Gun Maverick,he told the outlet. “So all of these things we’re working on, we’re discussing Days Of Thunder and Top Gun Maverick.”

Days Of Thunder, if you’ve not seen it, is Tom Cruise as the wonderfully named Cole Trickle, driving a NASCAR racing car, and pretty much mirroring the plot of Top Gun.

Cruise certainly has the clout to get most films he wants to get made, made. Furthermore, Paramount Pictures has done very well by him over the years. Whether that means anyone will stump for Cole Trickle 2, though, remains to be seen…
