In a surprisingly quick turn of events, it looks like Fede Alvarez’s Alien: Romulus sequel will go before cameras later this year.
It’s an exciting time to be a fan of the Alien series, considering we have a TV show on the way in the form of Alien: Earth, and a sequel to last year’s fun reinvention of the franchise, Alien: Romulus.
Director Fede Alvarez proved to be a smart appointment to usher in a new cinematic era for a hallowed cinematic institution that had lost its way a little and as such, he’s rightly been given another chance to develop his horror-centric take on a series which has straddled several genres throughout the years.
What is somewhat surprising is just how quickly things seem to be moving. While appearing on the Marea Nocturna podcast, Alvarez has revealed that pre-production on a Romulus sequel is ramping up and he plans to be shooting the film by October. That means we’d probably see the film released later next year, marking a tight two year gap between the filmmaker’s two Alien movies.

The director of 1979’s Alien, Ridley Scott, recently spoke about how creatively tired he became with the series, but there seems to be a creative renewal happening in the franchise at the moment. Given that rumours have been floating around regarding the possibility of a crossover with the Predator series (something hinted at in the Predator: Badlands trailer's nods to Weyland-Yutani), there might be even more to look forward to yet.
Perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised by how quickly things are moving: Alvarez did state back in February that he wanted to get a Romulus sequel into production this year, and it seems that aim is still achievable. Given that we’ve just seen the full trailer for Alien: Earth arrive, not to mention a 13th August stream date on Disney+ UK, it’s fair to say that the series hasn’t felt this alive for a long, long time.
We’ll bring you more on the Alien: Romulus sequel as we hear it.
