The Running Man is back in cinemas this winter, only this time, Edgar Wright has made it. Here’s the trailer.

This November sees the release of The Running Man courtesy of Paramount Pictures, marking Edgar Wright’s follow-up to 2021’s Last Night In Soho and adding yet another spin on a Stephen King novel to the glut of adaptations that we’ve been getting lately.

Stephen King’s novel is a pretty dark affair. He even wrote it under the pseudonym of Richard Bachman, a pen name that allowed him to exercise a more cynical and nasty streak to his work. While that may yet prove to be the case with the final film, the first trailer is presented in a hyper-kinetic style with several signature Edgar Wright flourishes. In short, it looks like it’s going to be a good time at the movies.

Glen Powell will play the film’s titular running man, Ben Richards, a disgruntled member of a future dystopian US society where violent game shows are the ‘opiate of the masses’. America’s particular favourite TV programme? The Running Man, a nightly show where hunters chase contestants across the country, killing them for the satisfaction of the viewers at home. When a desperate Richards signs up for the show, he must stay alive for 30 days to win the ultimate prize.

Powell has previously talked about how making the film was the hardest thing he’s ever done. Still, we’d imagine the physical and mental difficulties were more than offset by getting to work with Wright and a stellar supporting cast that includes  Michael Cera, Katy O’Brian, Lee Pace, William H. Macy, Sean Hayes, Jayme Lawson, Karl Glusman, Sandra Dickinson, and Emilia Jones.

Oh, and did we forget to mention Colman Domingo and Josh Brolin, both as antagonists? Domingo and Brolin both appear in the trailer too and despite bringing very different energies to the proceedings, seem like they’ll be adding a welcome dash of villainy.

The Running Man launches in November and you can catch that first trailer below.
