Jason Statham is set to return for The Meg 2 – and Ben Wheatley has joined the project as its director, it’s been revealed.

The planned sequel to The Meg continues to gain traction, with the news that Ben Wheatley has been hired to direct the movie.

Wheatley – whose latest film, Rebecca, is now available on Netflix – is also set to direct the next Tomb Raider movie, as he heads towards some more mainstream productions.

In the case of The Meg 2, he’s now set to steer a sequel that thus far has been penned by Jon and Erich Hoeber, along with Dean Georgaris. How close they’ve stuck to any of Steve Alten’s source novels remains to be seen, but we’re going to put a fiver on ‘not very’.

Jason Statham is set to return in the lead role, and is actively involved in developing the film as well. Where this leave the Tomb Raider sequel we couldn’t tell you at the moment. Given that the first The Meg film grossed over half a billion dollars worldwide, don’t be surprise if this project takes priority.

We covered the making of the original The Meg in a Film Stories podcast earlier this year, incidentally. We’ll leave you with that, and update you as we hear more on The Meg 2 in due course…
