Just where Christopher Nolan will make his next film remains to be seen – and Netflix has revealed at least a chat has taken place.
Just where Christopher Nolan chooses to make his next film is something of a mystery at the moment. Ordinarily, it wouldn’t be. For the past decade and chance, Nolan has made Warner Bros his home. Yet the fallout from last year’s Tenet, and more to the point Warners’ decision to debut its 2021 slate of films on its HBO Max streaming service alongside a theatrical release, has seen Nolan openly critical of the company.
So much so that it’s no longer a foregone conclusion that whatever his next project proves to be, it’ll be made at Warners. Given Nolan’s commitment to the big screen, few believe it’ll be made at a streaming service – but that hasn’t stopped Netflix having a conversation about it.
This was revealed by Scott Stuber, the head of original films at Netflix, who was chatting to The Wall Street Journal. He confirmed that Nolan was one of the filmmakers who still feels global distribution of movies on the big screen is important.
“I think there are aspects of global distribution in the cinema that are still appealing. Chris Nolan and I have spoken quite a bit”, Stuber said, “and that’s still something he wants deeply. If we can’t provide that, it will still be an issue for him”.
Might things change? Stuber argues that “I think we have a model that works and we’ve done well with the theatres that have played us. As these things change, we’re all having these conversations to see where it all lands and what the landscape on the other side of all of this is”.
Don’t hold your breath where Nolan is concerned, certainly. But things are clearly changing all the time…
