A new take on Into The Woods is coming to the London stage, with Terry Gilliam co-directing.
Among the many plays announced by The Old Vic for their new season is one obvious crowd magnet: a new version of Stephen Sondheimās fairytale mash-up musical Into the Woods as co-directed by Terry Gilliam. Gilliam was first linked to this job way over a year ago. Things in theatre have obviously been on a bit of a go-slow recently, but maybe the extra thinking time will only make the end result that much richer and more delicious.
All credit is also due to Sondheimās book writer James Lapine and Gilliamās co-director, the choreographer Leah Hausman, of course. Hausman helped Gilliam turn his English National Opera production of The Damnation Of Faust into the most violently unforgettable night of live theatre that this writer has ever been lucky to see.
This new version of Into the Woods is likely to be both extremely popular, on whatever post-Covid scale we can measure these things, and also quite the event. It will run from April to July 2022. Iāve got to get myself there, somehow. Casting has yet to be announced but, honestly, donāt expect James Corden.
