The 1992 hit The Bodyguard – starring Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner – is heading back to the big screen in a new remake.

Originally conceived in the 1970s as a vehicle for Diana Ross and Steve McQueen, the film of The Bodyguard finally landed in 1992, with Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner taking on the lead roles. It would go on to be a huge international hit, the soundtrack album would sell by the truckload, and a stage musical would follow. Costner at one stage considered a sequel, co-starring Princess Diana.

Now though, that original movie is getting the remake treatment. Matthew Lopez has been hired to pen the screenplay for the film, with original writer and producer Lawrence Kasdan involved as producer once again. Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich are also producing.

A remake has been mooted on and off for the best part of a decade, but this looks like it’s finally at a point to go forward. There’s no word as of yet on casting, nor of a director (Mick Jackson helmed the 1992 version). As we hear more, we’ll let you know.

This is a Warner Bros project, incidentally. The first we’ve reported on since it lost Chris Nolan…
