Director Penelope Spheeris has been revisiting 1992’s Wayne’s World, and the story that she and its star – Mike Myers – didn’t get on.
This month, it’s birthday celebrations for the film
Wayne’s World, that’s marking its 30
th birthday
with a new Blu-ray release. As part of the marking of three decades of the film, its director, Penelope Spheeris, has given a new interview to The Hollywood Reporter looking back at the film.
The story of the movie, as we explored in
our podcast episode here, is one of a not-always-easy production, and a soured relationship in the end that led to Spheeris not directing
Wayne’s World 2.
The new interview digs into this a little, but Spheeris plays down the idea that she and Myers – indeed, and the rest of the actors – were not getting on. “I am going to break the myth right now”, she explains. “When we were shooting
Wayne’s World, there really were no clashes with the actors. The reason people
think that is I wasn’t able to direct
Wayne’s World 2 because I didn’t want to make any cuts to the first one that they asked me to do. And that was the only point of contention that we had, honestly”.
She explained that she’d clashed with actors before and since on other films – naming Rip Torn and Molly Shannon, although not offering more information than that – but downplayed the disagreements with Myers. There’s more detail in the full interview,
here.
Bottom line: happy birthday
Wayne’s World….
