Get ready for RIPD 2: Rise Of The Damned, which was made and rated with barely anybody noticing: more details here.
On paper, it looked like smart casting. Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds in a big screen adaptation of the comic book movie
RIPD? Even appreciating this was pre-
Deadpool Reynolds, what could go wrong here?
Well, enough.
Released in 2013, the film – backed by Universal – fizzled out at speed at the box office, and it seemed that plans for a franchise were duly shelves as a result. But there’s still life in the world of straight to DVD/video/streaming/wherever they go now sequels. As such, Universal has given us
RIPD 2: Rise Of The Damned.
With a hat tip to our old chum – and Film Stories scribe – Fred Connelly for spotting this, the film popped up at the Motion Picture Association of America’s new rating list last August. From that we learned that
RIPD 2: Rise Of The Damned has earned a PG-13 rating in the US, for “sequences of violence, language, disturbing images, and some crude/sexual references”.
Given that nobody – outside of those making it and involved in its greenlighting – appeared to even know the movie was happening, this has all proven to be quite the surprise. Not a lovely surprise – although who knows, it may end up being a masterpiece – but a surprise nonetheless.
We can tell you that the sequel is directed by Paul Leyden (who make 2020’s, er,
Chick Fight), and he co-wrote the script with Andrew Klein. Richard Fleeshman, Jake Choi and Kerry Knuppe take the lead roles. And now we have a UK release date too. The film is heading to DVD and Blu-ray in the UK from April 3rd – and
you can find more on that release here.
