Barney the dinosaur is heading back to the screen in a live action movie.
Help yourself to a prize from the jar if you saw this story coming. The brilliant Oscar-nominated Get Out star Daniel Kaluuya is teaming up with Mattel Films to make a live action film about Barney the big purple dinosaur.
Kaluuya has recently set up his own company, 59%, and it’s through that firm that he’ll be collaborating on the movie. He is set to produce the film at the very least.
In a statement following news of the project, he told The Hollywood Reporter that āBarney was a ubiquitous figure in many of our childhoods, then he disappeared into the shadows, left misunderstood”.
“Weāre excited to explore this compelling modern-day hero and see if his message of āI love you, you love meā can stand the test of time”, he added.
As of yet, no studio is attached to the project, but presumably once development work has been undertaken and a script put together, then Mattel Films and its partners will start shopping the project around.
No word yet on whether Kaluuya will be involved in front of the camera as well as behind. More as we hear it.
