With Inside Out 2 in cinemas, Pixar boss Pete Docter has said that a spin-off TV series is finished and will appear on Disney+ next year.

As Inside Out 2 breaks box office records, Pixar creative boss Pete Docter has talked briefly about the spin-off TV series the studio has planned.

According to Docter, who wrote and directed 2015’s Inside Out, the series – called Dream Productions – will delve into the surreal reveries Riley experienced in that earlier film. Docter also added that production on the series has finished and that its release on Disney+ is less than a year away.

ā€œWe have finished,ā€ Docter told Entertainment Weekly. ā€œIt’s coming out next spring. I’m not sure that there’s been a specific release date, but in the first film, remember we go to Dream Production to see how Riley’s dreams are made? It semi-explains why they’re so weird. We’ve continued the exploration of the power of dreams and how they affect us in our waking life, as well. So it’s pretty cool.ā€

As Docter himself previously admitted in an interview with Time magazine, Inside Out 2 was the financial shot in the arm Pixar needed. “If this doesn’t do well at the theater,ā€ Docter told the outlet on the 11th June, ā€œI think it just means we’re going to have to think even more radically about how we run our business.”

Since then, the animated sequel has exceeded expectations; it’s made almost $380m worldwide at the time of writing, and its opening numbers were the second highest in Pixar’s history (2018’s Incredibles 2 is still in first place).

After a difficult first half of the year for mainstream filmmakers, with such movies as The Fall Guy and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga underperforming at the box office, Inside Out 2's success is a welcome bit of good news for cinemas in general.
