British movie podcast of the week: Nerdfest

Each week, we recommend an independent British film podcast that’s well worth your time: here’s why Nerdfest is worth a listen.

Sometimes you see the name of a podcast and you just know it’s definitely going to be right up your alley. Nerdfest fits that description perfectly.

Hosts Hazel, Jon, Peter, Dan and Ian met at improv comedy workshops in Newcastle and bonded over their mutual loves of comedy, as well as movies and TV shows. The name ‘Nerdfest’ came about from their regular cinema clubs which started in 2015. These watch parties, and the ongoing discussions and laughs afterwards, became a podcast in December 2017.

Rather than just discuss one movie per episode, Nerdfest is set up more like a magazine show, with regular features relating to the movies, TV shows, games or books they’ve each consumed recently; games such as Film Buff or Film Bluff; a game where they each take turns to give three movie facts and the others have to separate crazy facts from crazy fiction, Nerd Court; for when a disagreement is had on a particular movie, where the prosecution and defence put forward their respective arguments and Shameful Gap; when a member of the team admits to not seeing a classic movie they should have, and giving their opinions now they have seen it.

While Nerdfest has grown and evolved over the last few years, the hosts love and passion for the podcast and for their friendships has not. They regularly receive glowing reviews about their chemistry and it’s very clear to even a first time listener how close everyone is, and how much those improv comedy roots still show – it’s a very funny podcast!

Nerdfest really is a festival of all things nerdy and fun. In the absence of any of organised festivals this year, why not relax on a sunny day, and listen to some Nerdfest instead?
