Our weekly slot where we recommend an independent UK movie podcast – and this one started with Suicide Squad.
David Ayer’s Suicide Squad isn’t a movie that you can say accomplished a lot of great things, other than Margot Robbie’s version of Harley Quinn and an Oscar win for Best Makeup and Hair Styling (yes, really!). But Suicide Squad is responsible in-part for the podcast we’re featuring this week – the sublime Show Me The Podcast.
Meeting at their Anatomy of Film Class at the University of the West of England, hosts Harrie and Lorraine bonded initially over a love of film and became best friends, but it wasn’t until years later that Show Me The Podcast was born.
It was co-host Harrie’s outrage at her initial viewing of Suicide Squad which became the catalyst for her to download and listen to a movie podcast about the film. Unsated from the experience, she texted her frustrations to Lorraine and asked five simple words “Want to record a podcast?” Obviously Lorraine said yes!
Harrie and Lorraine have a friendly, relaxed style of podcast, often involving their partners and other collaborators, and being ex-film students they bring their knowledge and experience into each topic without ever feeling like they’re being condescending to the audience. Listening along genuinely makes you feel like you’re part of the group and part of the conversation with your good friends. Sometimes podcasts hosted by friends can feel exclusive, but Harrie and Lorraine’s relaxed, cheery style always feels inclusive and welcoming, despite them often having a difference of opinion!
Having a podcast whilst also having full-time jobs, families and not living locally to each other can take its toll though, and last July after much discussion and soul searching, they decided to end the podcast. A few months passed and they used that hiatus as a time to reflect on what they loved about doing Show Me The Podcast, specifically about working with each other and all the things they loved and have learned about podcasting and in October 2019 they returned in a blaze of glory. Since then they’ve been going from strength to strength.
A reviewer once commented they were ‘podcast perfection’. Find out for yourself by downloading and subscribing today, and let them show you the podcast!
