Our movie podcast recommendation of the week? Well, there’s something really quite special about Sudden Double Deep – and here’s why.
The best podcasts often have simple premises, along with a unique way of interpreting, dissecting and delivering insightful and engaging information in a way that no-one else does. In a vast ocean full of movie podcasts all vying for your audible attention, it can be hard to stand out, but Sudden Double Deep takes a simple but unique premise and runs with it.
The concept came about after host Daryl heard a feature on weird triple bill movies linked by one word. He pitched the idea to his good friend Ben. Together they started Sudden Double Deep in the summer of 2016, with the premise that they would take one word that ties three completely different movies together and discuss each of those movies. The impact of this was tremendous (because their name is a play on Sudden Impact, Double Impact and Deep Impact and I had to get that in there) and at the start of their second year Daryl’s wife Jeanette joined the duo to become a trio.
Since then Sudden Double Deep has evolved to include spin-off shows that give deeper looks into specific movies related to the elements in the previous episode. While the host line-up has changed over time, with Ben leaving to become a father and being replaced by fellow podcaster and screenwriter Matt, the content, both in quality and quantity has only become greater.
The fantastic thing about Sudden Double Deep is the perfect balance of knowledge, experience, taste and dynamic between the three hosts. Each voice is distinguishable and each brings something different to the discussion. Because they talk about three films which differ in genre, era and often quality, there’s a good variety of old and new, mainstream and obscure, indie and blockbuster which keeps each episode fresh and entertaining. Occasionally they’ll go off-piste and cover a triple bill based on other factors, but they generally stick to the tried and tested formula, because clearly, it’s working!
