Paul Feig’s sequel to A Simple Favour – Another Simple Favour – reunites Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively. More here.

A Simple Favour remains a highlight of 2018’s theatrical calendar. Director Paul Feig and stars Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively fashioned themselves a project which really played to each of their talents, with Kendrick and Lively in particular using the film to deconstruct their own unique movie star personas across 117 minutes of twists, laughs and drama. The film performed commercially as well throughout its theatrical run, grossing $97m worldwide on a $20m budget. Lionsgate made a tidy profit on the movie, although isn’t involved in its follow-up.

The darkly comic mystery followed a homely vlogger (Kendrick) who investigates the disappearance of her elegant (and enigmatic) new best friend (Lively). Given the warm critical and commercial response to the film, a follow-up has been in the works for years: A sequel has been in development for years; Our own Simon Brew spoke to Feig about A Simple Favour on the Film Stories podcast in 2018, and discussed the sequel when Feig was our guest at a live podcast recording in 2022.

Around a year ago, it was revealed that Amazon Studios was backing the sequel although it wasn’t confirmed that the film would be skipping cinemas. That does now seem to be the case. Feig took to social media to announce that the film – titled Another Simple Favour – would be premiering at SXSW before appearing on Amazon’s Prime Video streaming service at the beginning of May:

I have a simple favor to ask you… can you save the date? #AnotherSimpleFavor from @AmazonMGMStudio is premiering as the opening night film at @SXSW in Austin on March 7th. And then we hit @PrimeVideo on May 1st. Stay tuned for more details and much more fun! pic.twitter.com/dQJ1GiPqyv

A poster was also revealed which you can see a slice of above.

It’s obviously a shame we probably won’t get to enjoy this one on a cinema screen, but still: Feig has been given the opportunity to return to these characters and this world. The first film was a treat and it will be interesting to see where the sequel takes us, apart from Capri, Italy of course, as you can see from the synopsis below.

In Part Two, we see the return of Stephanie Smothers (Anna Kendrick) and Emily Nelson (Blake Lively) as they head to the beautiful island of Capri, Italy, for Emily’s extravagant wedding to a rich Italian businessman. Along with the glamorous guests, expect murder and betrayal to RSVP for a wedding with more twists and turns than the road from the Marina Grande to the Capri town square.

More as we hear it.
