Jennifer Lopez stars in Netflix’s new sci-fi action thriller which finds her teaming up with an artificially intelligent robot. Watch the first Atlas trailer here:

The continuing rise of AI is a ripe subject for filmmakers. The latest director to tackle the subject is Brad Peyton in his new film Atlas which is heading to Netflix next month.

Here’s the first Atlas trailer.

As you probably just saw, the film stars Jennifer Lopez as the titular character, a data analyst thrust into a dangerous mission.

Here’s the full synopsis for good measure:

Atlas Shepherd (Jennifer Lopez), a brilliant but misanthropic data analyst with a deep distrust of artificial intelligence, joins a mission to capture a renegade robot with whom she shares a mysterious past. But when plans go awry, her only hope of saving the future of humanity from AI is to trust it.

We won’t lie, we’re a little concerned about what kind of a message the film might send about AI but we’re intrigued. Jennifer Lopez inside a big robot, Aliens-style? Count us in!

Joining Lopez in the film’s cast are Simu Liu as the film’s baddie, plus Sterling K Brown and Mark Strong. Gregory James Cohan voices Smith, the AI powering the machine Lopez’s Atlas is inside of.

Netflix has been in the news lately after announcing that it won’t be telling us its subscriber numbers anymore. We’ve recently also reported that films like The Mothership and Kathryn Bigelow’s Aurora have been scrapped, not to mention a computer told executives not to make A Knight’s Tale 2 because it wouldn’t be algorithm-friendly enough.

Netflix also recently announced that it’s focusing on middle-budget films, but we can safely say Atlas missed that memo. Not only is Lopez probably well compensated for her time, but the film looks pretty shiny and shiny means cash money was spent on the visuals.

Atlas is heading to Netflix on the 24th May.
