The core creative team are ‘tinkering’ with an idea for Bill & Ted 4, reveals Alex Winter.
It’s far from assured, but it seems that the creative minds behind 2020’s Bill & Ted Face The Music are playing with the idea of revisiting the series’ beloved characters once more.
Alex Winter forms one half of the titular duo, and while out on the press tour for Destroy All Neighbors, he spoke on The Sarah O’Connell Show about the prospect of re-teaming with co-star Keanu Reeves for another turn as Bill S Preston Esquire and Ted Theodore Logan, the beloved pair of slackers who are eternally on the verge of actually doing something meaningful with their lives.
Apparently, Winter and Reeves are working with the series’ writers Ed Solomon and Chris Matheson to figure out if there’s another story to tell… and it looks like that might possibly be the case.
Says Winter, “We’re tinkering with a fourth movie idea that all of us like, and the guys are going to write, so we’ll see. It takes us time to get these things going, and we never want to do them unless they’re great”.

He added that “they [Solomon, Matheson, Reeves] feel the same way, it has to be right. We love [the movies] because they’re oddball, and they’re not typical mainstream films. They’ve never been cash-grab movies; nobody has gotten rich off the Bill & Ted series. We really do make them sincerely from a place of love and interest”.
There’s an idea in place for Bill & Ted 4; Alex Winter isn’t giving away what it is, but suggests it’s “kind of obvious”. That idea is being turned into a screenplay, and then the battle will get underway to try to get the film made.
Bill & Ted Face The Music, the third film in the series, arrived in 2020 following many years of speculation and occasional updates, with Winter popping up infrequently to assure us that the project was indeed still alive and progress was being made. It looks like we might be in for a similar journey this time, although when Winter says ‘nobody has gotten rich’ from the films, that could be a nod towards the last film’s box office gross, which was around a quarter of the previous two films (without adjusting for decades of inflation).
Still, there are plenty of other ways to extract profit from a film beyond its box office, so let’s hope that all involved can find the story they want to tell. If that proves to be the case, the rest will hopefully take care of itself.
