Netflix is pressing ahead with the sequel to its first blockbuster film – but the Will Smith-headlined Bright sequel will have a new director.
Before Extraction became a gigantic movie success for Netflix, one of its biggest ever movie releases had been Bright. The film starred Will Smith, was written by Max Landis and directed by David Ayer. It was Netflix’s first self-funded blockbuster movie.
And whilst critically it didn’t seem to win that many people over, Netflix was very happy with the number of eyeballs that watched it. As such, a sequel was mooted around the time of the original.
Flash forward a few years, and said sequel is finally going ahead. Both Will Smith and Joel Edgerton are expected to return for the new film, Landis and Ayer will not.
Instead, Ayer is co-writing the script with Evan Spiliotopoulos and T S Nowlin, but he won’t be directing. Instead, The Transporter and Now You See Me helmer Louis Leterrier is now in talks to direct the sequel.
No word yet on when production is likely to start, but we’ll keep you posted as we hear more.
