British Independent Film Awards – or BIFA – has announced its annual awards nominees. It’s been a stellar year for British film.
In case you needed some evidence that 2023 has been a great year for British film, especially British debuts, the BIFA nominations have just come in this morning.
British Independent Film Awards recognised a total of 26 British feature films. Rye Lane leads the pack with a whopping 16 nominations in total, including nods for Raine Allen-Miller for directing and Best Joint Lead Performance for the film’s stars David Jonsson and Vivian Oparah.
Charlotte Regan’s Scrapper follows closely with 14 nominations. Four of those are for Regan herself; she’s up for Best Director, Best Debut Director, Best Screenplay and Best Debut Screenplay. Harris Dickinson and Lola Campbell are also up for Best Join Lead Performance.
Andrew Haigh’s All Of Us Strangers, starring Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal received 14 nominations. Molly Manning Walker’s How To Have Sex also triumphed. The hard-hitting, deeply relatable drama scored 13 nominations. You can read our review here. Paris Zarcilla’s Raging Grace, a gothic thriller about a Filipino housekeeper, squeezed in two nominations as well.
All Of Us Strangers, Femme, How To Have Sex, Rye Lane and Scrapper are all up for Best British Independent Film while Anatomy Of A Fall, Fallen Leaves, Fremont, Monster and Past Lives compete for the title of Best International Independent Film.
This year’s nominations highlight what a diverse talent pool we have in the UK. Nominated this year are dramas, romantic comedies and post-apocalyptic thrillers. The British independent film scene is livelier than ever, and that truly is something to be grateful for.
The BIFA winners will be announced on 3rd December.
