Black Swan director Darren Aronofsky’s crime comedy Caught Stealing arrives this August. Here’s the first trailer:
Director Darren Aronofsky loves to try his hand at different genres. While there’s often a thrillingly dark edge to whatever he turns his hand to, over the years we’ve seen him delve into horror, drama and surreal psychodrama, to name but a few.
Caught Stealing – his upcoming crime comedy – is out in August. Sony is backing the film, but reportedly isn’t looking at it as an awards magnet like Aronofsky’s 2022 drama, The Whale, which was nominated for two Oscars (and won two). Instead, it’s billed as a ‘gritty Safdie-like crime thriller’ with ‘decent’ commercial chances.
Given how offbeat some of Aronofsky’s films can be, the setup for Caught Stealing does sound surprisingly straightforward. The project is based on the book of the same name by Charlie Huston, who also wrote the script. The story, per the synopsis:
Austin Butler stars as Hank Thompson, a high-school baseball phenom who can’t play anymore but everything else is going okay. He’s got a great girl (Zoë Kravitz), tends bar at a New York dive, and his favorite team is making an underdog run at the pennant. When his punk-rock neighbor Russ (Matt Smith) asks him to take care of his cat for a few days, Hank suddenly finds himself caught in the middle of a motley crew of threatening gangsters.
Matt Smith is rocking a mohican which looks worth the price of admission all by itself, by the way.
Regina King, Liev Schreiber, Vincent D’Onofrio, Griffin Dunne, Benito A Martínez Ocasio, and Carol Kane co-star. We’re looking forward to that August release date.
