Demi Lovato examines the effects of being thrust into the limelight at a young age in her directorial debut Child Star, here’s the trailer.


Demi Lovato shot to fame as the star of Disney Channel sitcom Sonny With A Chance. This led to a highly successful music career but also a plethora of personal problems from growing up in the limelight.

Lovato has now made her feature directorial debut with documentary Child Star.

The darker side of children’s television, particularly Nickelodeon, was recently examined in the chilling Discovery+ series Quiet On Set, which was a thorough and uncompromising look at the abuse rampant in the industry.

Bill And Ted actor Alex Winter made a documentary on a similar subject called Showbiz Kids, which featured Evan Rachel Wood, Jada Pinkett SmithCameron BoyceBaby PeggyTodd Bridges, Marnie Cooper and Milla Jovovich. It is avaliable to watch on Sky Documentaries.

The synopsis for Child Star reads as follows:

The documentary film Child Star explores the highs & lows of growing up in the spotlight through the lens of some of the world’s most well-known former child stars. Through celebrity interviews, vérité scenes, and archival footage, this film deconstructs the stages of earlier stardom and looks at the entertainment system over the last century. Co-director / actress Demi Lovato sits down with iconic former child stars such as Drew Barrymore, Kenan Thompson, Christina Ricci, Raven-Symoné, JoJo Siwa, Lovato’s Camp Rock co-star Alyson Stoner, and more to reflect on their personal experiences working in the entertainment industry in never-before-heard stories. Together, they take a look at the next generation of child actors and how to move forward in an ever-changing landscape.

Lovato co-directed the film with Nicola Marsh.

Child Star will stream on Disney+ in the UK from 17th September.
