It’s little secret that Alita: Battle Angel set up a possible sequel, but the chances of it appearing seem to be very much on the slim side.
Earlier this week on this very site, we ran a piece arguing that the 2019 movie
Alita: Battle Angel deserved just a little bit more than it actually got. That for its flaws, it’s a hugely ambitious piece of science fiction cinema with quite a lot going on. You can find the piece
here if you’re interested.
One thing the film does is go to great lengths to set up a sequel, with at least a trilogy of movies in mind. It looks as though the chances of an
Alita 2 are very much on the slim side, and in a
conversation with Collider, one of the film’s stars – Christoph Waltz – seems to agree.
“I haven’t heard anything and I’m a little disappointed and surprised that I haven’t heard a thing so far, because I know that it has followers. I know that people liked it and aside from what others said, I loved it and I liked working on it and I liked the result”, he said, when quizzed about a follow-up.
“You know, it was Fox and Fox doesn’t exist anymore. Now it’s Disney. Maybe it doesn’t fit into the Disneyfication, but I have no clue. I have no clue. Maybe they’re working on something and I wouldn’t be the first person to hear, but meanwhile, I haven’t heard anything”, he added.
The film grossed just over $400m worldwide, but cost nearly half that just to make. It’d be a nice surprise, therefore, if it happened. But the chances seem slim. We’ll keep you posted if we hear differently.
