Denzel Washington’s agent will be getting a call – it looks as though there’s a sequel to Crimson Tide in the offing. More here.

Jerry Bruckheimer made an appearance on The Rich Eisen Show this week, where he gave brief updates on several projects, most of which we know to be in some stage of development. Another Top Gun film, a Pirates Of The Caribbean sequel and a return for Tom Cruise to motorsport with Days Of Thunder 2 – all were mentioned, and are all projects that in one way or another have already been mentioned in the past.

One surprise, however, was Bruckheimer’s announcement that a sequel to the submarine-set thriller Crimson Tide is in the works, with Bruckheimer adding that a director and writer are already in place. They’re developing a story that will follows on from the events of the first film, in which Denzel Washington’s young lieutenant commander clashes with Gene Hackman’s commanding officer over the firing of a pre-emptive nuclear strike.

Although Bruckheimer didn’t reveal who would be taking up the reins from the late Tony Scott in the director’s chair, he did add, “we have a really good director and writer talking to the navy right now about what’s going on under the water.”

In the lead-up to the 1995 film, ‘discussions with the navy’ would end up becoming perhaps the most fascinating aspect of the film’s journey to the screen, with some major disagreements over the film’s ultimate direction. You can read more about that the original Crimson Tide's production history in AJ Black’s piece.

Along with Scott, contributing writer Robert Towne and actor Gene Hackman have also passed away. Denzel Washington is, of course, still with us and could return for the sequel, says Bruckheimer: “If we give him a good script, I think he’d do it,” the producer added.

Tony Scott’s collaborations with Jerry Bruckheimer are a continuing source of new material for the producer, who’s put out a new Beverly Hills Cop film and a Top Gun sequel in the last few years, with another one in the works. Not to mention a Days Of Thunder follow-up. Now Bruckheimer is reviving Crimson Tide too, it’s surely just a matter of time before Will Smith signs up for an Enemy Of The State 2, isn’t it?

We’ll bring you more on any of these projects as we hear it.
