Don’t horde crafting materials: that’s CD Projekt’s response to recent reports that Cyberpunk 2077 save files can become corrupted if they swell past the 8MB mark.
Word of all this first emerged on Reddit, where one user flagged that breaking that 8MB limit could leave players’ save files corrupted and unrecoverable. Players who gather lots of materials, craft items, and then sell those to make money are the ones most at risk, it seems, since it’s all that item data that ups the size of the save file.
When this was brought to GOG’s attention, the site replied that, “Unfortunately the save file is damaged and can’t be recovered.”
That’s pretty bad news for players who’ve already sunk hours into the game – and until CD Projekt Red increases the file size limit in a future patch (which GOG says it “might” get around to doing), the advice it gives is to “…use an older save file to continue playing and try to keep a lower amount of items and crafting materials. If you have used the item duplication glitch, please load a save file not affected by it.”
It isn’t yet clear whether this glitch occurs on all systems or whether it’s exclusive to PC (Eurogamer suggests that it might be Windows-specific), but it’s the latest nugget of bad news in a pretty grim launch for what is arguably the most anticipated game of the year.
So to sum up: craft carefully, folks.
