Dakota Johnson and Sean Penn headline single location drama Daddio, and the first trailer has landed: more here.

It would be fair to say that Dakota Johnson hasn’t had the best month. It began with a press tour that seemed to be doing more harm than good in trying to promote Sony’s Spiderman spin-off Madame Web, in which her comments during the tour generated a huge amount of press. This was swiftly followed by a slew of vitriolic reviews – we gave Madame Web a firm but fair one star.

Still, Johnson has many films in the pipeline, the next one to be released will be single location philosophical drama Daddio. For reference, this is the film Johnson was talking about when she described Hollywood as “heartbreaking” and “fucking bleak” – a conclusion she came to because Daddio took “a lot of fighting to get made.”

At any rate, Daddio’s synopsis reads as follows:

Dakota Johnson plays a woman who steps into a New York cab at the airport, driven by a man played by Sean Penn. She’s clearly preoccupied and just wants to get home. He’s a curbside philosopher. Immediately, he engages her in conversation which starts in small talk then gets bigger, deeper, and riskier as he steers her to her destination“.

It sounds similar in intent to Jim Jarmusch’s Night On Earth, an anthology film which followed the occupants of five different taxis around the world over the course of a single night. Chicaco Cab is another taxi based drama worth tracking down, as is the opening segment of Richard Linklater’s directorial debut Slacker.

Johnson and Penn are listed as the only cast members. Christy Hall, who previously developed and co-wrote Netflix superhero comedy series I Am Not Okay With This, wrote and directed the film.

Penn will next be seen in thriller Asphalt City and Patricia Arquette’s directorial debut Gonzo Girl.

Daddio will be released this year, an official date has not yet been confirmed, but Sony Pictures is handling the distribution, we’ll keep you updated as we hear more.
