Feast your eyes on curated footage from the upcoming Apple sci-fi series Dark Matter, starring Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly.
In an alternate timeline, maybe you were a carpet fitter. Unless you already are a carpet fitter, in which case, maybe there’s a parallel reality in which you’re popular disc jockey, or a pilot, or perhaps even a spaniel.
Such is the premise – well, apart from the spaniel part – of Dark Matter, the upcoming sci-fi TV series coming soon to Apple TV+. Joel Edgerton stars as a clever scientist type who suddenly ends up in other realities where he’s confronted with alternate versions of himself and paths not travelled.
The series is based on the book of the same name by Blake Crouch, and emerges on the tail end of the multiverse zeitgeist brought about by the likes of Everything Everywhere All At Once and assorted Marvel films. (There’s certain to be more multiverse antics in the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine, out this summer.)
Taking place over nine episodes, Dark Matter will also star Jennifer Connelly and Alice Braga, among others, with Crouch himself serving as creator/writer and Jakob Verbruggen (House Of Cards) directing the first three installments. The trailer below gives an idea of what to expect – it looks slick, stylish and graded a distinct shade of brown.
If it’s a synopsis you’re after, here comes one now:
Hailed as one of the best sci-fi novels of the decade, “Dark Matter” is a story about the road not taken. The series will follow Jason Dessen (played by Edgerton), a physicist, professor, and family man who — one night while walking home on the streets of Chicago — is abducted into an alternate version of his life. Wonder quickly turns into a nightmare when he tries to return to his reality amid the mind-bending landscape of lives he could have lived. In this labyrinth of realities, he embarks on a harrowing journey to return to his true family and save them from the most terrifying, unbeatable foe imaginable: himself.
Apple TV+ has good taste when it comes to sci-fi shows, so there’s every reason to add this to the old must-watch pile. There’s an alternate version of us out there somewhere that actually has the time to keep up with all these things.
Dark Matter will premiere on the 8th May 2024 on Apple TV+.
