Den of Thieves 3 officially happening

Den Of Thieves 2 has done good business ā€“ and Lionsgate has confirmed that Den Of Thieves 3 is pressing ahead.

It was just a couple of weeks ago that the director of both Den Of Thieves films, Christian Gudegast, opted for the risky strategy of announcing that another film was all ready to go and awaiting the studioā€™s approval. Going public in this way can sometimes backfire if the studio (Lionsgate in this case) doesnā€™t share your optimism.

But this was a typically bullish tactic from the director of a brace of films about ultra macho cops and robbers who live a high stakes existence that the rest of us mere mortals can only imagine.

“It’s already pitched. It’s already done. We’re ready to go. We’re feeling very good about it,” said Gudegast as Den Of Thieves: Pantera rolled into US cinemas (not UK ones, sadly, we still donā€™t even have a release date over here).

It looks like the gambit has paid off, with the film earning $47.5 million globally from a $40 million budget, not a huge win but Lionsgate will be confident that the film has plenty of mileage to continue earning. Thatā€™s whether that comes from international sales or via PVOD where the first Den Of Thieves proved to be a very good earner.

Gerard Butler and O’Shea Jackson are expected to return for the third film and weā€™re keen to hear about the setup, although nothing has been shared at this point. The second film does the tried and tested franchise trick of taking things to an exotic location abroad, but what Den Of Thieves 3 has in store for us, weā€™ll have to just wait and see. Bridlington we hear is lovely this time of year. Maybe Den Of Thieves: Bridlington might work?

Hopefully, here in the UK we actually get to see Den Of Thieves: Pantera at some point first. Weā€™ll bring you more on this one as we hear it. In the meantime, hereā€™s the synopsis and the trailer for the upcoming second film.

Having plotted to rob the Federal Reserve Bank in the first film, this time the crew will be aiming for an equally-impossible take. Butler’s Big Nick is back on the hunt in Europe and closing in on Donnie (Jackson Jr.) who is embroiled in the dangerous world of diamond thieves and the infamous Panther mafia as they plot a massive heist of the world’s biggest diamond exchange.
