Depending on who you talk to, there’s chat about Barbie 2 already

Margot Robbie in the Barbie movie, not filmed in Sunderland

We’re under a month away from the release of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie movie – and what do you know, there’s Barbie 2 chat getting underway.

Hype is building with some momentum for next month’s live action Barbie movie, that sees Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling headlining, and Greta Gerwig behind the camera. You don’t need us to tell you that it’s heading for a day and date clash with Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, which also releases on July 21st. But we appear to have told you that again anyway. Dammit.

To business. There’s quiet confidence that Barbie will emerge in good shape at the box office, and the boss of toy company Mattel is not being shy about planning more films. In fact, CEO Ynon Kreiz has now talked about “more Barbie movies”. Which isn’t the most radical idea, given that there are dozens of animated ones. But still, that’s not quite what Kreiz was on about. Barbie 2 is on the cards.

But woah, says Margot Robbie. Well, not woah, but she’s taking the pragmatic approach. She notes – and they were both talking to Time – that “I think you fall into a bit of a trap if you set up a first movie whilst also planning for sequels”. She doesn’t say whether she’s watched The Amazing Spider-Man 2 or not, but I’m having a quid on the fact she has.

It’s a bit wait and see, then. But there are (unsurprising) franchise plans afoot here. July 21st has a bit riding on it…
