The new Inspector Clouseau will be Eddie Murphy, in a slightly different take on The Pink Panther movie series.

The now Amazon-owned MGM continues to raid its cupboard of existing movie franchises for new fodder, and reboot spin a bottle has this time ended up pointing in the director of The Pink Panther.

The original series of movies was directed by Blake Edwards, and helped catapult Peter Sellers to comedy legend status as Inspector Clouseau. Then, Roberto Benigni took on the role for a single movie, before Steve Martin played Clouseau in a pair of not brilliantly received films more recently, although you did get bonus Jason Statham in one of them.

And now? It’s Eddie Murphy’s turn, albeit via a slightly different approach.

Murphy will indeed take on the role of Clouseau, assuming his deal can be closed. But the film this time will be a hybrid of live action and animation, with the inept detective teaming up with the cartoon Pink Panther to solve crimes and stuff.

Chris Bremner has penned the script for this particular take on the series, and the plan is for Jeff Fowler to direct, once he’s wrapped up his third Sonic The Hedgehog movie.

No release date has thus far been announced. We just know that the film is looking like it’s happening, and that comedy gold will no doubt be around the corner.
