Elizabeth Olsen will join Julia Roberts in Panic Carefully, Sam Esmail’s follow-up to 2023’s Leave The World Behind.
Films that release straight to streaming can sometimes find it tricky to make an impact beyond their initial few weeks, quickly becoming just another tile on a screen full of tiles. However, one straight-to-streaming film that neatly sidestepped that pitfall, was Leave The World Behind, the Sam Esmail-directed thriller that dropped at the very end of 2023 on Netflix.
The duo are reuniting for Panic Carefully, a mystery project that attracted the interest of Netflix, Paramount and Warner Bros before the latter came out on top and secured the film. Next to nothing is known about the project itself, beyond that rather curious title and the fact that Esmail’s own Mr Robot series has been mentioned as a comparison point. As has 1991’s brilliantly dark horror thriller, The Silence of The Lambs.
What we do now know, courtesy of Deadline, is that the Scarlet Witch herself, Elizabeth Olsen, will be lining up opposite Roberts – and that’s ramped up our anticipation levels. 2017’s Ingrid Goes West is one of our favourite Olsen movies and finds the actor opposite Aubrey Plaza. The ensuing conflict between the characters gives the film a brilliant spark, making it well worth seeking out.
Plaza is an excellent actor too of course, but in Panic Carefully, Olsen has the opportunity to pit her talents against one of the biggest movie stars of the last 50 years. Whether the duo will be at loggerheads we don’t yet know given that the story is under wraps, but what we do know is that we’re glad that this one will debut inside an actual cinema.
