Karla Sofia Gasconā€™s name is dropped from Netflixā€™s Oscar awards campaigning, as the Emilia Perez starā€™s previous social media posts come to light.

About a week ago, one of the frontrunners for the Best Actress Academy Award was Karla Sofia Gascon, courtesy of her acclaimed lead performance in the film Emilia Perez. Leading the Oscar field at the moment, Emilia Perez has proven heavily divisive (not least in the Film Stories Shed), but Netflix has thrown sizeable amounts of money towards it, as it’s emerged as a strong Oscar contender.

But Oscars are, once you’ve got people interested, as much about the campaign as the film itself in the modern day, and any chance that Gascon had of adding an Academy Award to her shelf appear to have gone.

It was around a week ago that someone did a basic search on Gascon’s social media account, and discovered a whole bunch of posts that, well, beggared belief really. They’ve been widely discussed elsewhere, but hereā€™s a link to the journalist who (easily) discovered the posts on X/Twitter.

Gascon issued a statement and did an interview with CNN in which she denied being a racist. She has described the pushback she’s getting as a “campaign of hate and misinformation”.

That interview was apparently set up independently by Gascon, and if it was intended to put the flames out, it’d be fair to say it hasn’t worked. Many outlets have noticed that in the latest round of promotional awards advertising for Emilia Perez, Gascon’s name is no longer in the list of categories Netflix is campaigning for.

The story also broke before final voting had closed for this year’s BAFTAs, as well as the Oscars. Her chances have gone from one of the absolute favourites to non-existent, and Netflix has wasted little time recognising that.

Demi Moore remains the favourite to take home the Academy Award for her work in The Substance.
