According to a new report, Eden’s ‘$30-50m’ budget’ is proving to be a problem – and Ron Howard’s new film sits in limbo.

Ron Howard’s Eden is a film we’re curious about. It premiered last Autumn at Toronto International Film Festival and is said to be a darker look at human behhaviour and features an appealing (and marketable) leading trio in the form of Sydney Sweeney, Jude Law and Ana de Armas.

Yet according to a new report from The InSneider, the film still hasn’t secured a distributor following its premiere around five months ago. The cost is said to be the problem, with the report claiming that its price tag has it sitting somewhere between $30m-50m. When you factor in marketing the project effectively as well, it seems that Eden is proving to be too much of a gamble for any interested parties.

Just to be clear, the report also states that the quality of the film itself is not the factor, with reviews coming out of TIFF being on the mixed to positive side. According to its official synopsis, Eden 'follows a group of people in the 1940s who are fuelled by a profound desire for change; in order to turn their back to society they leave everything behind and set their futures on the harsh landscape of the Galapagos.’

Of course, things get darker and it all begins to go downhill. Attractive and talented actors being love rats and plotting each other’s downfall? A story set against the backdrop of a beautiful island? It sounds like a fictional mix between The Traitors and Love Island, and those shows (although being reality TV) certainly do great numbers.

World Of Reel describes the movie as ‘steamy and violent’ and you’d thing that alone would be enough to get backers onside, especially in this era of the resurgence of the erotic movie, but apparently not. It’s only been a couple of years since Howard’s Thirteen Lives, which cost a reported $93m to make, was put straight onto streaming by Amazon without any kind of theatrical release. Eden could yet go the same way but when we do hear more regarding the film’s release, we’ll certainly let you know.
