Director Christopher Landon and star Jessica Rothe have confirmed that Happy Death Day 3 is still alive and well. More on that below.
There’s a small glimmer of hope for all the Happy Death Day fans out there. Director Christopher Landon and lead actress Jessica Rothe took the stage at the American Cinematheque over the weekend and confirmed that the third film in the horror franchise isn’t dead just yet.
“The third movie is moving forward,” Rothe announced on stage with Landon, as reported by Bloody Disgusting.
Rothe stars in the franchise as Tree, a college student who has a nasty habit of getting stuck in a time loop with a serial killer. The time loop restarts when Tree dies, usually in increasingly gruesome ways.
The first film, Happy Death Day, made a killing at the box office in 2017, but its sequel, Happy Death Day 2U, failed to make a similar impression in 2019. Since then, plans for a third film have stalled. Blumhouse head honcho Jason Blum said in 2020 that the studio was still keen on making a third film, but one hasn’t materialised to date.

So far, Happy Death Day 3 has been envisioned as a possible series or a straight-to-streaming movie, which Landon said he was fine with if it got him the opportunity to make the film, which was going by Happy Death Day To Us in the past.
Not that Landon has been resting on his laurels since the last Happy Death Day. The director got Vince Vaughn and Kathryn Newton to swap bodies in the horror comedy Freaky, and his iPhone horror Drop arrives in cinemas on Friday.
