Spike Lee and Denzel Washington bring us a new crime thriller about a music mogul in the middle of a ransom plot. Watch the Highest 2 Lowest trailer here.
A new Spike Lee joint is always a big deal. The director’s last feature was 2020’s excellent Da 5 Bloods that went straight to Netflix due to a certain global health crisis, but another movie by Lee is upon us.
Highest 2 Lowest stars the director’s frequent collaborator Denzel Washington as a music mogul who finds himself in a tough spot when a kidnapping plot forms around him and a ransom is demanded.

Highest 2 Lowest is Lee and Washington’s fifth collaboration and it looks to be another corker. The film is a reimagining of Akira Kurosawa’s High And Low from 1963, also an excellent film worth seeking out. That film was also a loose adaptation of the novel King’s Ransom by Evan Hunter.
Highest 2 Lowest premiered at the Cannes Film Festival where it received positive reviews from critics. You can spy some of their quotes in that trailer. This one is also an AppleTV+ joint with Lee joining forces with a streaming service again after Netflix distributed Da 5 Bloods. A24 is looking after Lee’s latest film in cinemas while AppleTV+ will bring the film to audiences at home.
The US are lucky enough to get Highest 2 Lowest in cinemas on 15th August, but UK audiences have to wait until 5th September when the film hits both cinemas and AppleTV+.
