Dwayne Johnson confirms that a Hobbs & Shaw sequel is on the way.

Count this now as the most surprising news story that you’ll read all day, but Universal Pictures has put into development a sequel to last year’s Fast & Furious spin-off movie, Hobbs & Shaw.

The movie, of course, starred Dwayne Johnson and The Statham, and whilst it caused some ructions amongst other members of the Fast & Furious ensemble (although apparently everybody’s friends now), it was a sizeable hit. A gross of $760m worldwide always suggested another film was likely, not least with there only being a few films left in the main line of Fast & Furioius films.

News of the new movie was dropped by Dwayne Johnson during a live Q&A on his Instagram feed. He confirmed in the midst of that that the sequel was being developed and “I’m pretty excited about it”.

Johnson admitted that they’ve got to “figure out the creative right now, and the direction we’re going”.

But he has updated his comments since, by confirming that the writer of the first film – Chris Morgan – is coming back for the second adventure. Morgan of course penned lots of the Fast & Furious films too, and is a key part of their creative time.

No timescales yet, so this one may take a little while to get to the screen still. We’ll keep you posted, though…
