Kevin Costnerā€™s Horizon: An American Saga is now a big streaming hit ā€“ but thereā€™s still no sign of a proper release for Chapter 2.

As much as co-writer, star and director Kevin Costner originally envisioned his four-film western Horizon as a saga – it is called Horizon: An American Saga, after all – the on screen drama is being rivalled by the battle to get the next film seen.

Costner has completed two of the four films thus far, and shot around nine minutes of Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 3. But when the first film didn’t earn big bucks at the box office last summer, Warner Bros pulled the theatrical release of Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2. A delay, we were told. Here we are, some six months after the film was supposed to be release, and there’s no sign of it on cinema release lists.

Itā€™s not as if it’s not been seen. Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2 debuted at the Venice Film Festival last autumn, and it’s getting a US premiere this month. But not a cinema release.

Perhaps then some impetus might be added to all of this by the news that Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 was, officially, the most streamed movie in America in January 2025.

Costner has resisted streaming funds to get the rest of his saga financed, yet the Netflix performance of Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 may yet test his resolve there. It does seem to open up a path to getting his films made, although – a la Greta Gerwig and Guillermo del Toro – he may be successful in getting a theatrical outing for the films should the streamer cough up.

Either way, Costner’s saga does seem to have fresh life in it. If Warner Bros could do a physical media release for film one in the UK too, I for one would be obliged.
