The live-action How To Train Your Dragon hasn’t even been released yet, but Universal is already moving ahead with a sequel.

The live-action version of How To Train Your Dragon is set to arrive in cinemas this June and the word on the street, or at least at CinemaCon, is that it’s actually rather magical. Journalists and cinema owners were treated to a special preview of Dean DeBlois’ adaptation of his own animated film and words such as “stunning” and “spectacular” were used on social media to describe the film.

Universal Pictures seem to also be very confident in the film and have already greenlit and dated a sequel, as reported by Variety from CinemaCon. Live-action How To Train Your Dragon 2 will hit cinemas 11th June 2027. DeBlois will direct the sequel and Mason Thames and Nico Parker will return as Hiccup and Astrid.

The news comes as Disney’s Snow White, another live-action remake of a beloved animated classic, is struggling at the box office, sparking speculation that live-action remakes are somewhat doomed and can never match the original. We’re hoping to be proven wrong with How To Train Your Dragon which is coming to cinemas on 13th June.

Like its animated predecessor, How To Train Your Dragon will take us to the Viking village of Berk, which is in constant danger from dragon attacks. Young Hiccup, the son of the village’s chief, injures a particularly fearsome dragon, a Night Fury, but has a change of heart about killing it.

The 2010 film was followed by two equally acclaimed sequels, so it’s no wonder Universal was keen on turning them into live-action films. There’s no official word on whether there are plans to turn the third film in the franchise into a live-action film, too, but we’re willing to bet the idea has been thrown around at the watercooler at Universal Pictures.

How To Train Your Dragon is in cinemas 13th June.
