JJ Abrams | New film starts shooting in England

JJ Abrams is directing his first film in seven years, and cameras are rolling on Ghost Writer in England. More here.

The messy production and even messier reception to 2019’s Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise Of Skywalker sent a lot of careers on unexpected trajectories, but perhaps the most notable impact was felt by JJ Abrams. While he was far from the only creative at fault for delivering a largely unloved end to one of the most popular cinematic sagas of all time, the film bears his name and as it stands, some six years later is still the last film on his directing resume.

Thankfully, that’s all about to change given that Abrams’ secretive new project has now begun filming in London. According to World Of Reel, the Warner Bros-backed project is going under the title of Ghost Writer and will be eyeing a 2026 release date. As is often the case with Abrams’ films, things are shrouded in mystery, but here’s what we do know:

The cast includes Glen Powell, Jenna Ortega, Emma Mackey and Samuel L Jackson. As you might expect, no plot details have yet been revealed for this rather secretive project, although rumours that it’s a time travel movie are said to be wide of the mark.

Claims have been made that Abrams’ film might be some kind of 1980s set adventure film, perhaps even loosely inspired by The Last Starfighter, a rumour we covered when it emerged last summer. It has been suggested that the story will follow “an author of popular fantasy novels who reveals that the mythical world he’s known for creating is actually real.”

That will presumably send Glen Powell’s leading man into that world on some type of quest.

Nothing is confirmed as yet, with the name of the title – currently slated as Ghost Writer – not yet announced either. In short, lots could change here but with what we’ve heard so far, our interest is definitely piqued. We’ll bring you more on this one as we hear it.
