Jumanji 3 is now in production but Dwayne Johnson has confirmed this is the last time we’ll be heading to the jungle. More on that below.
Jumanji 3, or Jumanji 4 if you count Joe Johnston’s original 1995 masterpiece, has entered production ahead of the December 2026 release date. Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan and Jack Black are all back as the Jumanji game characters and we’re sure all kinds of chaos will ensue as the foursome head into the jungle once more.
In fact, it looks like this will be the last time they will be getting in trouble. Johnson took to Instagram to announce the start of production and noted in the caption that the whole project has been “a massive, fun, heartfelt adventure.”
He also added: “Feels emotionally appropriate for our beloved JUMANJI franchise to end on this beautiful grace note of our final film.”
Now, such news should be taken with a pinch of salt. It doesn’t seem like anything is sacred or final in modern Hollywood, so it seems like just a matter of time before someone thinks to reboot or continue the franchise again.
In slightly happier news, it looks like the third – fourth?! – Jumanji film will call back to the original film as Johnson added a detail from its poster as well as the infamous dice necklace. Colour us intrigued.
Jake Kasdan will once again return to the director’s chair and he’s also co-written the script with Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg, just as he did with Jumanji: The Next Level. Both previous new Jumanji films, 2017’s Welcome To The Jungle and 2019’s The Next Level, received relatively favourable reviews from critics and drew plenty of bottoms to the cinema seats, earning Sony Pictures a lot of cash.
Johnson’s videos in the post also seem to suggest the film will be subtitled “Cross Platform” which could very well serve as another hint to the original and the two worlds that will be colliding. In the first film, poor Alan Parrish (played by Robin Williams as an adult) got sucked into the world of a board game whereas the newer films have utilised video games to bring them to our own times.
Johnson’s post promises a Christmas 2026 release date, but the Film Distributors’ Association lists Jumanji 3 as being released on 11th December 2026. We’ll keep you posted on all Jumanji-related matters.
