Kevin Costner’s Horizon | Question marks over films three and four in the saga

Kevin Costner’s Horizon is set to be a four film saga on the big screen – but half-way through, it’s proving to be a challenge to get Horizon 3 and 4 moving.

Already regarded as one of the biggest risks in cinema this year, the Horizon saga is Kevin Costner’s big-screen return to both directing and to westerns.

He’s independently put together what’s planned as a four-film tale. Parts one and two are pretty much done, and will be released in cinemas – in the US at least – this summer. We don’t have news on a UK distributor as of yet, but believe me, I’m looking.

Had all gone to plan, then Kevin Costner – who’s co-writing, starring and directing the films – would have shot Horizon movies three and four last year. However, the strike by actors in Hollywood put a dampener on those plans, and a report has now popped up at Puck which suggests he’s struggling to get all the funding together to complete the saga.

It’s a hugely ambitious thing he’s trying to do. The first two Horizon films are reportedly costing $100m apiece, and Costner has put his own money in to get them off the ground. There are other investors involved too, but getting them to stump up more for the next films isn’t easy.

While Costner hasn’t commented on the rumours – in fact, right through, he’s just got on with making the films – it does now appear that there’s a significant question mark over the second half of the Horizon saga.

It may just be that funding has to wait until the first two films play out in cinemas this coming summer. Warner Bros is releasing them via its New Line arm in the US, and they’re being unveiled in June and August of 2024.

There’s a lot on the line for Kevin Costner here, and as has been well documented, the production of Horizon is what delayed Costner’s final episodes of the Yellowstone TV show too.

As we hear more, we’ll let you know. Hopefully, news of that UK release isn’t far away.
