Twilight Of The Mallrats is next on Kevin Smithās list of personal projects, but thereās no guarantee that it will shoot in 2023.
Kevin Smith has entered a point in his career where he seems content to revisit his existing stories, along with working as a director for hire on shows like Netflixās
Masters Of The Universe. In recent years, weāve seen sequels to
Jay & Silent Bob and
Clerks, with
Tusk and
Red State also being touted as Smith projects that he wants to develop sequels for.
For many years now though, itās a follow-up to his 1995 slacker comedy,
Mallrats, that has been on his radar. With
Clerks III completed and released, Smith has spent months touring the US to promote and exhibit the film in a roadshow format, that requires a remarkable amount of time commitment. With that now complete, the filmmaker has turned his attention to the coming year and
Mallrats 2: Twilight Of The Mallrats is the project he is aiming to get into production next.
Weāve
been here before, with Smith talking up the possibility of shooting
Twilight Of The Mallrats or
Clerks III back in 2020, before ultimately opting to make the latter
instead. Now though, the
Mallrats sequel is his prime focus, along with his commitments to other projects where he is working for hire.
Speaking recently on his
Fatman Beyond podcast, Smith said that āIāve got a bunch of writing projects for other people, so Iām unfortunately not at liberty to reveal, but some of them are ācluckingā wonderful. Thatās a different beast than the stuff I do for myself. What am I most looking forward to? Weāre seeing some traction on
Mallrats 2: Twilight Of The Mallrats, so⦠fingers crossed, folks.ā
Smithās willingness to hit the road for months on end to motivate his fanbase and sell his movies is presumably a huge plus for any studio considering backing one of his projects. In the case of
Mallrats 2: Twilight Of The Mallrats, he claims that Lionsgate was happy with the performance of
Clerks III and that has helped to grease the wheels for a
Mallrats follow-up.
Time will tell if this is the year that a
Mallrats sequel heads into development but whatever happens, thereās no lack of effort on Smithās part. Weāll bring you more news on this one as we hear it.
