Martin Scorsese’s epic Western crime saga is arriving on premium video on demand services tomorrow, with no word on a streaming release yet.
Apple TV+ fans will have to wait a little longer for their 206-minute Scorsese fill, as the director’s latest murder-y epic is heading to premium video on demand before making its way to the tech giant’s streaming service.
The film earned a better-than-predicted $152m at the box office when it debuted this October. For a 3-and-a-half hour adult crime movie though, that’s pretty impressive territory, though still some way short of its reported $200m budget. No doubt Paramount are looking to buoy up those numbers before relinquishing the film to Apple’s streaming service.
Oppenheimer recently debuted at number one on every VoD chart after its extended run in cinemas, and there’s a chance the similarly lengthy and historical Flower Moon could repeat the same sort of success, attracting those audiences who like their 3-hour movies with added toilet/biscuit breaks.
Killers of the Flower Moon is set in 1920s Oklahoma, and depicts the serial murder of members of the oil-wealthy Osage Nation, a string of brutal crimes that came to be known as the Reign of Terror.
The film has kicked off its early awards season push this weekend, with Lily Gladstone picking up Best Actress and the flick as a whole getting Best Picture at the New York Critics Circle awards.
The move to digital availability throws up more questions about how we judge the success of a film in 2023 – more on that soon.
