Mattel continues to leverage its hottest toy products into movies, with the announcement of a Matchbox film based on its toy car line.

We know that we’re getting a Barbie movie, but toy company Mattel also has plenty of its other toy lines in the pipeline to become movies as well. The long-gestating Masters Of The Universe project, Uno and even Polly Pocket are all somewhere on the adaptation path, en route to becoming films with Mattel hoping to ride the wave of success that some toy-to-movie adaptations have enjoyed over the last few years.

Whilst it seems to us that some of those toys mentioned above could work as films, others seem like a long shot at best but that hasn’t stopped the toy manufacturer from giving another of its products the movie treatment. The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Mattel will be partnering with Skydance Media to develop a film based on its Matchbox line of toy cars.

According to Mattel, one Matchbox car is sold every second so that all important ‘pre-awareness’ for the film surely exists which is, it seems, all it takes to get a project like this going.

In what seems like well-planned corporate synergy, Matchbox relaunched its brand this year, with a greater focus on sustainability.

The script for the film will be penned by David Coggeshall, who wrote Paramount’s Orphan: First Kill and Lee Daniels’s planned (but still untitled) Netflix thriller. We’ll bring you more on this one as we hear it.
