Antoine Fuqua’s Michael is indeed, as had been reported, moving to 2026. One lot of extra shooting done, more may be following.
It’s with a sense of trepidation that I write a Michael Jackson story, knowing full well that a small section fanbase of the late singer’s social media advocates on Twitter are, er, ‘a little unconstructive.’
If that happens to be you, then please note that we engage with constructive criticism in our comments, but have to leave it there.
There was a story a few months ago anyway, that the biopic of Michael Jackson, Michael, was being delayed into 2026. This was pushed back on at the time, but has turned out to be true. The film had been due for release later this year, but around three weeks of reshoots have been required, and the movie is back in post.
The reshoots, depending on which version you believe, are to either expand the production from one film into two, or to address issues regarding ‘legal complications.’ Maybe a bit of both, and maybe the truth will out over time.
The plan, Lionsgate has announced, is to release the film now on 24th April 2026. It’s still not confirmed for definite whether it’s going to be split into two movies, and should the nod be give, more shooting may yet be required.
Antoine Fuqua is directing the film, which stars Jaafar Jackson as Michael, alongide Colman Domingo, Nia Long and Miles Teller. It’s officially sanctioned by the Michael Jackson estate, so few are expecting it to be particularly warts and all. Might be wrong, but the likelihood is that we’re getting quite a sanitised take on Jackson and his story. No confirmation on that, though.
There’s been no trailer or footage from Michael as of yet, just still photography. However, given we’re less than 12 months away now from the release of the film, that should change this side of Christmas.
More as we hear it.
